Professor Philip Coppens
Department of Chemistry, SUNY Buffalo
Philip Coppens was born in Amersfoort, Holland and received his Ph.D. in physical Chemistry from the University of Amsterdam, Holland in 1960. During this time his research focused on the relationship between structure and light sensitivity in a class of nitro-containing organic compounds. He went on to complete postdoctoral work at Brookhaven National Laboratory, followed by professional appointments at the Weizmann Institute and Brookhaven. He joined the faculty of SUNY Buffalo in 1968 where he currently holds the Henry M. Woodburn Chair of Chemistry. His current research interests focus time-resolved crystallography, supramolecular solids, charge-density studies, and modulate structures.
